Man Up!
While it’s definitely more than just monster trucks, grilling an d six-pack abs, true manliness is hard to define. The words macho and manly are not synonymous.
Taking lessons from classic gentlemen such as Benjamin Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt, authors Brett and Kate McKay have created a collection of the most useful advice every man needs to know to live life to its full potential.
This book contains a wealth of information that ranges from survival skills to social skills to advice on how to improve your character. Whether you are braving the wilds with your friends, courting your girlfriend or raising a family, inside you’ll find practical information and inspiration… More >> The Art of Manliness: Classic Skills and Manners for the Modern Man

I found this book an amazingly shallow list of platitudes. Perhaps this is what I should have expected from a book in this category, but there are also brilliant examples of writings on manners and style. For example Hardy Amies “The Englishman’s suit” is now back in print in the English version. Or Asfa-Wossen Asserate’s “Manieren”, which is a bit limited in range, because not available in English translation (which makes it perhaps even better). The “Art of manliness” is shallow in content, weak in inspiration and badly researched. Rating: 1 / 5
Of course, men don’t wear hats any more, so maybe the title’s a little archaic. But that’s the point, isn’t it? Manliness is old fashioned.
It’s refreshing to see a man who’s not embarrassed to be “manly” and who thinks highly of the “manly” virtues. If you want a preview of the author’s views on this subject, you can take a look at his website – [...]. He comes across as a very decent, thoughtful and reasonable guy.
If I have one criticism, it’s that the book is a little too focused on appearances rather than “the inner man”. It is possible, IMO, to be a man and only weigh 120lbs and not really care. It is possible to be manly and still not to be very good at “commanding a room”. Dressing up isn’t that important to a lot of men — and it really doesn’t matter, to my mind. You don’t actually have to know about carpentry or plumbing to be manly. And so on. Manliness is an inner state.
I’d recommend two books by another aspiring author for those who’d like a different take:
Dorkismo: the Macho of the Dork This book, as its title suggests, shows you how you can be a Man and a Dork at the same time!
Act Like a Gentleman, Think Like a Woman: A Woman’s Response to Steve Harvey’s Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man This one is focused more on the relationship side of being a Man. At worst, it’ll teach you how to be a cad. At best, it’ll show you how not to be a cad. Either way, it’s pretty funny. Rating: 4 / 5
I have not completed this book, but I think it is a great resource for men. The various “how tos” and references within the book make this a great gift for any man that truely wants to be a better man! Rating: 4 / 5
its not a bad book. im sure i will end up referencing it in the future if ever i need to tie off a boat anchor. really, this book can be judged by its cover. there are too many praise reviews in my opinion. reading all of these reviews, i believed this book focused more on the ideal of manhood, with inspirational aim at younger men who would like to seperate themselves from the pack. it reads more like a “how to” without really describing what a man should be. if you want to learn how to land a plane in an emergency, or what forks and spoons go with what foods at a dinnertable, then this book is for you. for me, its just filler to get to that 200 page mark. the folks that wrote this book want to live in the past, and there is nothing wrong with that. today is today, tomorrow is tomorrow and the past will be forever gone. however, everyone is capable of taking what is valuable for them and discarding the rest. i took some things. but be warned, this book aint your daddy Rating: 2 / 5
I found the art of manliness website when I Googled “how to tie a tie” and browsed their articles. It is a great site so I decided to buy their book (and a shirt). The book covers a variety of topics and goes into detail about how to be a gentleman in the modern world. Rating: 5 / 5
